Scale
- 3 cloves garlic, grated
- 1 lime, zest and juice
- 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil
- 2 tsp sambal oelek
- 5 tbsp soy sauce
- ¼ cup water
- ¼ cup light brown sugar
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 15 oz super-firm or extra-firm tofu, pressed & drained
- Vegetable oil for cooking
- 1–2 green onions, sliced on the diagonal
- ½ cup fresh cilantro, roughly chopped
- 1 tbsp toasted white sesame seeds
Instructions
- In a small bowl, whisk garlic, lime zest, lime juice, sesame oil, sambal oelek, soy sauce, water, and brown sugar. Set aside half for marinating tofu.
- Cut pressed tofu into ½" cubes and pour half the marinade over them. Allow marinating for at least 20 minutes.
- Optionally coat marinated tofu with cornstarch for added crispiness, if desired.
- Heat vegetable oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat and add the marinated tofu, cooking until crispy and golden brown.
- In a small saucepan, simmer the reserved sauce until it reduces slightly, about 5-10 minutes.
- Create a cornstarch slurry with simmering sauce and cook until thickened.
- Pour the thickened sauce over the cooked tofu, mixing until well coated. Allow cooking for another minute.
- Serve warm over jasmine rice, garnished with green onions, cilantro, and sesame seeds.
Notes
Press tofu well to remove moisture for better texture in cooking.
You can substitute sambal oelek with Sriracha for heat adjustment.
Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days in the refrigerator.
